Book flights with Avios instead of cash and you can both save money and lower the risk of losing money, should the Covid-19 pandemic affect your future travel plans. By spending points when you book a reward flight with Avios your cash outlay is lower and if British Airways cancels your flights, you won’t be massively out of pocket, whilst waiting for a refund. Of course, if that happens, BA will re-credit your points and fees. If you choose to change your flight yourself, British Airways is operating a Book With Confidence policy, so you’ll still get your points refunded and most fees too (depending on what they are for).

To book a reward flight with Avios you first need to earn enough points to redeem. Of course, you can normally earn Avios when you fly on BA or one of their partner airlines. But, whilst most people are staying at home, there are still plenty of ways to earn points, without leaving the sofa.

BA has partnered with Nectar. So you can earn Nectar points when you buy online, or in store, at Sainsburys or Argos. Ebay is another Nectar partner. Plus, when you top up your car’s tank or your personal snack supplies (we aren’t judging) at an Esso service station, you’ll earn Nectar there too. Simply convert your Nectar points into Avios, when you feel confident it is safe to travel again and you can finally add “book Avios reward flight” onto your to-do-list.

You don’t have to collect Nectar points either. BA has its own Avios e-store, where you can earn points on offers from a wide range of merchants. Topcashback is another website, where you can save money on your purchases and earn Avios too, win-win!

Choose the right card, to pay for your shopping and you can even double-dip on points. Sainsburys Bank and Amex offer Nectar cards. Choose any American Express card, which offers Membership Rewards points and they can be exchanged one-for-one with Avios too. Or you can get a BA Amex card to earn Avios points directly on all your spend.

So, let’s assume you’ve built up your points balance and you want to book flights with Avios for later in the year, to give yourself something to look forward to.

Well, before you go to BA.com and click on the “Book Avios Reward Flight” button, a word of advice: There are only a limited number of reward flight seats available on each flight. New seats can be released day or night right up to the departure date. Searching for reward flight availability on BA.com can be a bit of a chore, particularly if you want to consider a few different days or destinations. Nobody wants to stay up all night clicking refresh on multiple browser tabs. So use Reward Flight Finder instead. You can search for free and see a whole year of reward seat availability. If you can’t see the seats you want straightaway, set up an alert, we’ll keep searching, and notify you if seats become available.

Sounds good? It is! Visit rewardflightfinder.com and sign up today. (You can thank us later.)
