Reward Yourself With A Holiday In Gibraltar

Since the 17th of May, Brits have been able to travel to Gibraltar after the release of the UK Government’s ‘Green List’. The Green List is a limited list of countries that UK citizens can travel to and return from without the need to quarantine. The Green, Amber and Red traffic light system is based on the Covid-19 risk of different destinations and each tier has associated rules which travellers must follow on leaving and returning to the country. Quarantine f-free holidays are only allowed to green list countries. The countries of the UK have slightly different rules, but most leisure travellers will fly from England or Scotland and both have given a “green light’’ to Portugal and Gibraltar.

Whilst Portugal has been getting a lot of Green List love in the media, the team at Reward Flight Finder think it’s worth taking a closer look at Gibraltar. British Airways has great reward flight availability during June, with flights costing from as little as 6,500 Avios points one way in Economy or 12,750 points in Business Class. This rises to 7,500 and 15,000 Avios respectively, during the peak school holiday months. BA includes Gibraltar within its list of Reward Flight Saver destinations, which means all you will need to pay for your flights are enough Avios, plus £17.50 in fees, taxes and surcharges per person each way in Euro Traveller (Economy) and £25 in Club Europe (Business Class).

Given the current limitations on flights to the sun and the bargain deals available, it only seems pertinent to give you some great reasons as to why now it is the perfect time to book a reward flight to Gibraltar. Known as ‘The Rock’, this British territory off the coast of Spain is a melting pot of English, Spanish, and North African cultures. Not normally on the top of the list of most travellers, Gibraltar may now just be the right destination for you.

Make it more than just a weekend trip with our 5 reasons why you should be heading to Gibraltar this summer as part of your Green List Go-To!

Gibraltar’s Beaches

Gibraltar has 6 beaches in total, split on either side of its famous rock. Being located only a few short miles off the coast of Africa you can expect it to be the ideal warm-weather destination for those looking to sunbathe, snorkel, and surf.

This means that whatever type of traveller you are, whenever you’re in the mood to take a break from sightseeing, the scattering of beaches across this tiny peninsula enables a multitude of activities. Gibraltar’s Beaches also features some tantalising fresh seafood restaurants. For the gourmets out there, make sure to try Gibraltar’s national dish the Calentita, an oven-baked pancake-like meal made with chickpea flour, olive oil, water, salt, and pepper.

We recommend Sandy Beach. A picturesque beach with spacious soft sand with ample space to accommodate all types of fun-seeking beachgoers.

The Weather and Natural Landscape

Summer temperatures in Gibraltar can reach up to 40 degrees celsius so make sure to bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen! The amount of sunshine hits its peak from May to September as clear skies prevail. Given its location, Gibraltar receives cool waters from the Atlantic even in June and evenings can still be cool and windy. But all in all, Gibraltar gets 2,675 sunshine hours per year!

For such a small place (just under 7 square kilometres!), there is a surprising amount of sightseeing activities to do in Gibraltar. Begin by climbing to the top of The Rock. If a walk up the Mediterranean steps is too hot or exhausting, take the cable car up and admire the views.

On a clear day, you can easily see all of Gibraltar, and Spain, Morocco, and the sea. You’ll also see Europe’s only wild monkeys macaque population.

We recommend exploring Gibraltar’s St. Michael’s network of limestone caves. Featuring an awe-inspiring stalactite and stalagmite array. Many of the formations are lit up in a series of vibrant colours to emphasise their beauty. The magnificent acoustics aren’t wasted either, with the odd festival and gig hosted in the past.

History

One of the biggest aspects of travelling has been the exploration of culture. Gibraltarians culture oddly sits at a crossroad of familiar yet unknown for most Brits.

The history of Gibraltar can be mainly defined by its position in Europe. By guarding the mouth of the Mediterranean, its importance throughout the centuries has been unparalleled. Once part of unified Spain, Gibraltar became part of the British Empire in 1713 at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, since then it has faced 14 sieges in the last 500 years.

Language

Gibraltar has its own unique language. Llanito, is a strange blend of Andalusian Spanish and English, with smatterings of Portuguese and Maltese vocabulary, as well as words from Genoese and even Hebrew. Speakers tend to switch languages in the middle of a sentence, making it almost difficult to understand for those who only know English or Spanish.

Gibraltar’s “llanito” Dishes

Most of Gibraltar’s meals are comforting, filling, and flavourful. We’ve already mentioned Gibraltar’s national dish Calentita but do you know of the other local favourites? There’s Rosto, a pasta dish made with carrots, penne pasta, and beef in a tomato and white wine sauce, Torta de Acelga, a chard or spinach pie, and Menestra de Verduras, a stew made with blended vegetables and thick spaghetti.

So what are you waiting for? With BA’s Reward Flight Saver destinations and availability opening its doors to the green list, now is a better opportunity than ever to book some summer flights to Gibraltar with your Avios points.
