The British Airways Avios X Nectar Points Partnership
There’s no better time to download the Nectar app now that Nectar cardholders can convert their points to Avios. Nectar points can be redeemed through the British Airways Executive Club on flights, upgrades, hotel stays and more.
Avios collectors who are regular Sainsbury’s or other Nectar partner customers who may not have previously earned points via their food shopping may now benefit from the new system.
We’ve provided all of the important information you’ll need to get started earning extra Avios through Sainbury’s Nectar programme.
Link your BA Executive Club & Nectar Account
First off, you’ll need to link your Executive Club and Nectar accounts.
You will receive a confirmation email after you’ve linked your accounts. You can also check your linked status on the Nectar website and on the Executive Club Exchange.
Avios X Nectar Conversion Rate
After you’ve linked your accounts, you’re free to convert your points — starting from a minimum of 400 Nectar points into 250 Avios, or vice versa. It’s worth noting that you may now convert Avios back into Nectar, which wasn’t possible under the old Tesco Clubcard X Avios arrangement.
You can also set up automatic conversions every quarter, from one currency to the other. Don’t forget, Nectar Points can also be earned and spent at Esso, eBay UK, with several UK train operators and at Argos, as well as Sainsbury’s.
Additional details:
- The maximum number of points is 50,000 Avios or 80,000 Nectar points per calendar month.
- You can automatically convert up to a maximum of 25,000 Avios or 40,000 Nectar points per quarter in a calendar year.
- Only one Nectar account can be linked to one BA Executive club account at any given time and vice versa.
Earn Nectar Points at Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s is the UK’s second-largest supermarket chain and the owner of the Nectar Points loyalty programme. Founded in 1869, in 2020 it served 29 million store customers and nearly a billion online visitors. As well as operating around 1,420 grocery and convenience stores, Sainsbury’s is a major fuel retailer and has an extensive range of goods available for delivery, through its app and website. So the chances are that, if you live in the UK, you’re likely to buy something from a Sainsbury’s owned store several times a year. You might even bank with Sainsbury’s, have insurance with them or wear clothes from their Tu collection. Whatever you buy from Sainsbury’s the chances are you will be able to earn Nectar with every purchase too.
So in short, Sainsbury’s is the most likely place you will earn lots of Nectar points, especially if you do your regular grocery shop or regularly fuel your car at a Sainsbury’s.
The base earning rate at Sainsbury’s is 1 point per £ on all qualifying spend, online or in-store. At Sainsbury’s fuel stations, you can earn a point for every litre of petrol or diesel purchased. Additionally, Sainsbury’s often run “double points promotions”, bonus points offers and frequently issue coupons, with even more points-earning offers, to anyone who uses their Nectar card or app in-store.
Earn Nectar Points Elsewhere
If you want to build up enough Nectar points to convert them to Avios for a reward flight, it’s worth finding out all the places which you can earn them. Several train companies let you earn Nectar when you buy tickets, some utilities offer Nectar points on their bills, Dulux Decorator Centres issue them and you can also earn Nectar points for purchases made at several national retailers, other than Sainsbury’s. For example:
- eBay (1 Nectar point per £ up to a maximum of 300)
- Argos (1 Nectar point per £)
- Esso (2 Nectar points per £ in the sop and 1 for every litre of fuel)
Other Nectar partners include ASOS, Dunelm, Domino’s Pizza UK, Just Eat, MADE.COM, Lego and Booking.com.
Earn Bonus Avios points with the Nectar app
Make sure you have a Nectar account. Then, on your Apple or Android smartphone, download the Nectar app and log in with your credentials. After that, you’re set to start earning Nectar points and transferring them to Avios.
When you shop at Sainsbury’s, or other physical retailers offering Nectar, use the Nectar app, simply open the Nectar app and scan the barcode at the checkout to ensure you’re rewarded for your purchases. Alternatively, you can use a physical Nectar card or a keyring fob with your barcode on it. Whichever way you use your barcode, the app updates as soon as you’ve completed your shop!
If online shopping is more your thing, Sainsbury’s also lets you link your online shopping account to Nectar, as do most of the other partners who sell online.
Every week, the Nectar app sends you a push notification informing you of your new weekly deals. Up to ten offers, each week are possible, with bonus points ranging from 10 to 150 Nectar points per item. You’ll be able to incorporate this into your weekly shopping to boost your Nectar points for conversions.
Even people who don’t normally buy at Sainsbury’s should consider downloading the app and participating. Even if you just buy the recommended products once a week, you might earn up to 13,000 Avios — or more — per year, after converting your Nectar. That’s more than enough for a round-trip ticket to Europe in British Airways’ Club Europe short-haul business class.
Combine with Your AMEX spend
Using a BA American Express card to pay for your purchases will give you additional Avios points to add to your monthly points collection, in addition to earning convertible Nectar points through your normal spending & Nectar app incentives.
You’ll earn:
- 1 Avios point for every £1 spent with the British Airways American Express Credit Card (Blue).
- 1.5 Avios for every £1 spent with the British Airways Premium Plus Card (Black).
American Express Nectar Credit Card
At the time of writing, Amex is offering 20,000 Nectar points when you successfully apply for the card and spend £2,000 on it in the first year. You’ll receive 3 points per £ spent on all eligible purchases, and a further 3,000 Nectar points bonus if you add a supplementary cardholder by the end of July 2021. On average, Amex Nectar Credit Cardholders earn 9 times more points a year than Nectar members without the card.
Don’t forget that, if you have a different American Express card that’s eligible for Amex Membership Rewards, Membership Rewards points can also be converted to Avios on a 1 to 1 basis.
Start building those Nectar points!
Ultimately, this is an exciting partnership that enables you to continually build your Avios points balance through your normal shopping habits. With British Airways and Nectar, you don’t have to be a frequent flier to earn enough points to redeem for a reward flight ticket.
